In short, if your Mac runs Sierra today, then it can handle High Sierra because Apple has not restricted the list of compatible Macs. On the other hand, some functions are expected to be more selective. This is already the case in Sierra with Handoff, unlocking with Apple Watch, or the Universal Clipboard, which only work on newer Macs.
